The drama is adapted from the novel of the same name by Wo Sha Fei Ku Xin (我煞费苦心). While the core revenge story and the main characters' dynamics are retained, the 24-episode series makes significant changes to the narrative structure and character depth compared to the original novel.
- Character Arc: In the novel, the female lead is more proactive and dominant in manipulating the male lead. In the drama, her agency is somewhat weakened, and the narrative emphasizes the male lead's role as her protector and redeemer, shifting the balance of power in their relationship.
- Plot Structure: The novel is a lengthy story, and the drama condenses it into 24 episodes. This compression leads to a more streamlined revenge plot, but sacrifices some of the intricate scheming and secondary character development present in the source material.
- Character Dynamics: The drama focuses heavily on the "white-cut black" (appearing sweet but being ruthless) dynamic of the female lead and the "devoted dog" persona of the male lead. While present in the novel, these traits are amplified for dramatic effect in the series.
- Ending Detail: The novel concludes with the female lead pursuing her art career abroad, with the male lead respecting her independence. The drama provides a more traditional, romanticized happy ending where they end up together, emphasizing their union over her individual journey.
