The drama retains the core "rebirth and revenge" premise and the main characters' names, but makes significant changes to the plot, particularly the ending, to create a more uplifting and empowering story for the female lead.

  • Ending Change: The original novel has a controversial and tragic ending where the male lead, after becoming emperor, sleeps with three palace maids to produce an heir and has the children raised by the female lead, who is unable to bear children herself. The drama changes this to a Happy Ending (HE), with the couple working together to establish a new dynasty and bring peace.
  • Character Arc: The novel's female lead is portrayed as a much more tragic and passive figure, enduring repeated sexual assault and forced pregnancies during her first life. The drama significantly softens this background, focusing instead on her agency and strategic brilliance in her second life.
  • Plot Restructuring: The drama expands the political and strategic elements of the story, showing Xie Yuzhang's active role in winning over the Northern Kingdom and resolving conflicts, whereas the novel focuses more on her personal suffering and relationship with the male lead.
  • Character Arc: The novel's male lead is a more morally ambiguous figure who ultimately betrays the female lead's trust. The drama transforms him into a more heroic figure who is inspired by the female lead's convictions to overthrow a corrupt regime.

Plot Overview

Adapted from Xiu Ce's novel The Princess Returns (公主归来), the story follows Princess Baohua, Xie Yuzhang. After dying tragically in a political marriage to the Northern Kingdom, she is reborn with memories of her past life. Facing a crumbling court, she chooses to accept the marriage alliance again, but this time, she is determined to change her fate and the fate of those around her. Using her wits to protect her honor, she spreads Central Plains culture in the North and wins the people's hearts. General Li Gu, moved by her conviction, ultimately overthrows the corrupt Zhao Dynasty and establishes the Da Mu Dynasty, abolishing the marriage alliance system. Xie Yuzhang then uses strategic maneuvers to secure the North's surrender and, upon returning to the Central Plains, cleverly resolves the conflicts between the northern and southern noble families, writing a legendary tale.
